hardcorepup asked: Hey Felix, did you study art in college/uni? I'm having to make the decision of what career I want to do and I'm kind of scared my art will never be good enough to make a living out of even if I carry on with it in college and eventually go to university. But then I really enjoy art and don't really want to do something like business and find myself hating my job. so I was wondering what your take on my situation is. Sorry if you don't answer questions like this :P
Hi there! Actually I did not study art in college. I went instead for art history and anthropology, though I did take a stray printmaking course as an elective once. I must say, part of me does regret having not gone for art. So to you I say don’t worry about being ‘good enough’, if it’s what you love then go for it. Self improvement will develop as you go, and the more you do art the more you will discover new techniques and inspirations.
I have learned that college is more or less what you make it—so if you want to go and learn methods of improvement, then go and seek them from your professors. Make them teach you what -you- want to know! The resources are there, and the access to tools will be very good for you to explore what you like most. :) Hope that helps!
Although I probably should note that undertaking art college itself compared to a public university is a very serious/expensive decision. I would research what professors are there and what their area of expertise is before applying, so that you have an idea what kind of emphasis will be placed on your curriculum. :) -
